What is the Word on the Street? 2012-2013
In a school-wide effort, Lake View School will be learning a new vocabulary word each week- across all grades!

This "word of the week" will be incorporated into each classroom and all of our teachers will work on the word throughout the week with students.

Our students will be asked "What is the word on the street?"  They will be encouraged to name the word, define it, and use it in a sentence.  Most importantly, they will be encouraged to use it while speaking and writing!

This initiative utilizes high utility words (tier 2) students encounter while reading.  It is a fun, interactive, and beneficial activity for all students.

We encourage families to help us by using these words at home each week.  Please click on the below links for the word list and sample strategies for building your child's vocabulary.

FOCUS on RESULTS
Our 2012-2013 school-wide focus is reading and math comprehension, vocabulary development, non-fiction books, and writing in response to reading.
We use balanced literacy to teach reading, writing, and word study.  Included in our balanced literacy program is Guided Reading.  We use this practice to work with small groups of children at their reading levels.  Below you will find useful information on our focus areas:

Instructional Focus

We believe in a balanced approach to literacy in all curriculum areas. We will teach children to read well and have a love of reading by:

  • Modeling thinking, reading, language, speaking, and writing strategies
  • Providing time for purposeful reading, writing, speaking, and listening experiences in all subject areas
  • Using on-going and varied assessment tools to differentiate instruction
  • Fostering home-school partnerships around literacy
  • Utilizing technology to enhance student reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language products
